The heavy rain stayed away this morning so we could play outside with all the PYP friends.

These are photos of the Kindergarten classes lining up in the hallway, ready for the bell to go outside for PYP morning recess.  We were doing our "silent cheer", because of course we committted to not using our voices in the hallway.  How excited are we?

Someone was really happy to ring the bell.  The bell sound signals the time when we clean up our sand toys and head towards the flag pole to line up.

Surprise visit from the Grade 12 Buddies

Kindergarten was very happy today to have a surprise visit from several of the Grade 12 Buddies.  We know that they have very busy lunch hours and still made time to come down and sit with us.  We look forward to a special planned activity with them on October 28th. 

Sharing something beautiful

As a Show and tell theme, the children in Kindergarten were asked to bring in something that was beautiful to them.  Serving as a way to get to know each other deeper, the beautiful items were to stay in the classroom on a special table.  Anika chose to bring in a tree for the beautiful table and it was eventually going to be planted on the school grounds for many of her new school friends to enjoy.  We all were very excited to have planted the tree near the main entrance, right near the M made out of stone.  We made some predictions about how tall it would grow by the time they were Grade 12 buddies.  The general agreement was, taller than Miss Warner.  Thank you to the Franzen Brown family and Anika, as we will for sure be observing it for many years to come.

Dance Instruction through PE classes

The Kindergarten children are particpating in a series of dance classes through an instructor at Fabulous Feet, here in Maple Ridge.  Here is a message written by the dance teacher, for our blog.

Hi My name is Tara.  I  am a dance instructor at Fabulous Feet School of Dance in Maple Ridge. I will be teaching the kindergarten students hip hop. I will start off with a warm up that will  warm up their muscles and  teach them some basis hip hop dance moves.  From there, we will  move on to fun dance exercises across the floor and  end with a small combination that they will learn to music.

Our dances classes are going to be on October 21, 28 and 29th.  They all occur during our regular PE class and hve been co-ordinated through Mrs. Brookshaw.

Butterflies and Ladybugs learn to Hip Hop dance

Today we had dance class.

We danced to the song 'Who let the dogs out!"
Tara is our dance teacher.

The focus with our work with Orton Gillingham approach in Kindergarten is to have the children recognize the sound of the letter a when they are given a set of words that have the short a sound in them.  This is called auditory discrimination.  A beginning non reader will now have the short a sound availible to them to see and locate in words as the connection to the letter is made. 

They are not expected to be able to read or spell these words below but they are given to you as an example of the words we use in lesons to help the children hear the sounds.  Being able to hear and recognize the sounds in words is an expected skill that children in K will learn.
